History

London, Kentucky was established in 1826 as the seat of Laurel County. It was named after the capital city of England, likely by early settlers who admired the British city. The town grew around a central courthouse square, which remains a focal point of the city's downtown area.

During its early years, London served as a center for agriculture, trade, and government in the region. The completion of the Cumberland Gap and Middlesboro Railroad in the late 19th century further facilitated growth and economic development in the area.

Like many other towns in Kentucky, London played a significant role in the American Civil War. While the county as a whole was divided in its loyalties, Laurel County primarily supported the Union. The city served as a base for Union troops and a center for recruiting soldiers.
