History & Context
History Maui is an island located in the Central Pacific, part of the state of Hawaii in the United States. It is the second-largest of the Hawaiian Islands, with a land area of approximately 727 square miles (1,883 square kilometers). Known as the "Valley Isle," Maui is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, diverse landscapes, and vibrant culture. Geographically, Maui is characterized by its dramatic coastline, which features pristine sandy beaches, rugged cliffs, and lush valleys. The island is formed by two dormant volcanoes: HaleakalΔ in the east, which rises to an elevation of 10,023 feet (3,055 meters) and offers breathtaking sunrise views, and the West Maui Mountains in the west, with peaks reaching over 5,700 feet (1,737 meters). Maui's climate is generally mild and pleasant, with warm temperatures throughout the year. The island experiences two primary seasons: a dry season, known as "kau," which lasts from May to October, and a wetter season, known as "ho'oilo," from November to April. The varied microclimates on the island contribute to its rich biodiversity and make it a haven for outdoor activities and natural exploration.
