History & Context

History Mayetta is a small city located in Jackson County, in the northeastern part of the state of Kansas, USA. It is situated about 20 miles north of the state capital, Topeka. Mayetta has historical significance primarily due to its connection with the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, a Native American tribe. The history of Mayetta is intertwined with the history of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. The Potawatomi people are part of a larger group of indigenous peoples known as the Algonquian-speaking tribes, who originally inhabited parts of the Great Lakes region in the United States and Canada. In the early 19th century, due to various pressures from European-American settlers and the U.S. government, many Potawatomi people were forcibly relocated from their ancestral lands to areas farther west, including what is now Kansas. This removal was part of a broader policy of Indian removal that affected many Native American tribes during that time.
