A town and municipality located on Lake Saimaa in Finland

History

Mikkeli is a city located in eastern Finland. It is the capital and largest city of the South Savo region. The history of Mikkeli is closely tied to the broader historical developments of Finland.

Early History: The area around present-day Mikkeli has been inhabited for thousands of years. Archaeological findings suggest that people lived in the region as early as the Stone Age. However, organized settlement and urban development began much later.

Medieval Period: During the Middle Ages, Finland was part of the Kingdom of Sweden. The town of Sankt Michel (the Swedish name for Mikkeli) was established in 1743 by King Gustav III of Sweden as a garrison town. It was strategically important due to its location near the border with Russia.

Imperial Russia: In 1809, Finland was ceded to Russia following the Finnish War between Sweden and Russia. Sankt Michel became the administrative center of the province of Mikkeli in the Grand Duchy of Finland, which was an autonomous part of the Russian Empire.
