Shinto is the indigenous religion of Japan, and many of its followers consider natural features such as mountains, forests, and rivers as sacred and imbued with spiritual energy. Mount Nantai, along with nearby Mount Nyoho and Mount Taro, is considered one of the three holy mountains of Nikko.
