History

Naha International Airport, located in Okinawa Prefecture, is one of Japan's most significant transportation hubs, serving as the gateway to Okinawa's islands and connecting it to major domestic and international destinations. The airport's history reflects Okinawa's strategic importance and its dynamic transformation over the decades.

During World War II, the site where Naha Airport now stands was used as an Imperial Japanese Navy airbase. The airbase played a crucial role during the Battle of Okinawa, one of the most intense conflicts of the Pacific War. Following the war, the U.S. military took control of the facility, renaming it Naha Air Base. The airfield was extensively reconstructed and expanded to support military operations in the region, particularly during the Korean War and later the Vietnam War.
