Navarre Beach History

Navarre Beach is a barrier island located in Santa Rosa County, Florida, on the Gulf of Mexico. The island is named after the Kingdom of Navarre in northern Spain, and it has a rich history that spans many centuries.

The earliest known inhabitants of the Navarre Beach area were the Native American tribes, including the Muscogee, Choctaw, and Creek tribes. These tribes relied on the island's abundant natural resources, such as fish, shellfish, and wildlife, for their survival.

In the early 1500s, Spanish explorers arrived in the area and claimed it for Spain. However, it wasn't until the late 1800s that Navarre Beach began to be developed for tourism. In 1884, the Pensacola and Atlantic Railroad was built, providing access to the island for the first time.
