History

Nelsonville is a city located in Athens County, Ohio, United States. It is situated in southeastern Ohio, in the Hocking Valley region. The town was founded in 1814 by a man named Daniel Nelson, who purchased land in the area and established a grist mill and a distillery. The town was named after him and was initially known as "Nelson's Village."

Nelsonville's early growth was primarily driven by the coal mining industry. In the mid-19th century, the discovery of large coal deposits in the region led to a boom in mining activity. The Hocking Valley Coal Company, founded in 1870, played a significant role in the development of Nelsonville and the surrounding area. The company established mines, built railroads, and developed the infrastructure necessary to support the coal industry.
