Newport Beach, California - United States

History

Newport Beach is a coastal city located in Orange County, California. The area that is now Newport Beach was inhabited by the Tongva people for thousands of years before the arrival of Spanish explorers in the 18th century. The Spanish claimed the land for Spain and named it Rancho San Joaquin.

In the late 1800s, a group of investors bought the land that is now Newport Beach with the intention of creating a seaside resort. They hired William Collins, a landscape architect, to design the area and promote it as a tourist destination. Collins created an extensive network of canals that were inspired by those in Venice, Italy. These canals, along with a boardwalk, piers, and hotels, made Newport Beach a popular destination for tourists.

In 1906, the Pacific Electric Railway opened a line to Newport Beach, making it even more accessible to visitors from Los Angeles and other nearby cities. The city continued to grow throughout the 20th century, with the development of neighborhoods, marinas, and other amenities.
