History

Foxborough is a town located in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. It's perhaps most well-known for being the home of Gillette Stadium, where the New England Patriots, a prominent NFL team, play their home games. Here's a brief overview of Foxborough's history:

  • Early History: Foxborough was first settled in 1704 as a part of the town of Wrentham. It was initially known as "West Precinct" and later as "Foxborough" in honor of Charles James Fox, a British statesman who was sympathetic to the colonies' grievances against British rule.
  • Incorporation and Development: Foxborough was officially incorporated as a separate town on June 10, 1778. The town developed as an agricultural community, with farming and milling as primary economic activities. Sawmills, gristmills, and other small industries began to thrive in the area.
  • Industrialization and Growth: In the 19th century, Foxborough saw increased industrialization. The construction of the railroad in the mid-1800s boosted the local economy and allowed for easier transportation of goods. The town became known for producing straw bonnets, which were popular fashion accessories during that era.
