History North Manhattan Beach, also known as El Porto, is a neighborhood located in the city of Manhattan Beach, California. It is situated in the northernmost part of the city along the coastline of Santa Monica Bay. Here's an overview of the history of North Manhattan Beach: Early History: The area that is now North Manhattan Beach was originally inhabited by the Tongva people, Native Americans who lived in the region for thousands of years before the arrival of European settlers. Development: In the late 1800s, the land in and around Manhattan Beach began to be developed for residential and recreational purposes. The first subdivision in the area was established in 1902 by developer John Merrill. He named it "Manhattan" after his previous home in New York. Growth and Incorporation: As the area gained popularity, more people began to settle in North Manhattan Beach. In 1912, the city of Manhattan Beach was officially incorporated, encompassing the northern area as well. The city continued to experience growth throughout the early 20th century.
