Ocean City Boardwalk History The Ocean City Boardwalk is a popular tourist destination located in Ocean City, New Jersey, USA. The boardwalk has a long and interesting history, dating back to the late 19th century. In the early 1900s, a group of businessmen in Ocean City decided to build a boardwalk as a way to attract tourists to the area. The first boardwalk was made of wood and was built in 1902. It was only eight feet wide and ran for just one block. Over the years, the boardwalk was expanded and improved. In the 1920s, the original wooden boardwalk was replaced with a concrete boardwalk. In the 1940s, a portion of the boardwalk was destroyed by a hurricane, but it was quickly rebuilt. Throughout the years, the Ocean City Boardwalk has been home to many popular attractions, including amusement parks, arcades, and restaurants. One of the most famous attractions was the Steel Pier, which opened in 1915 and was known for its roller coasters and other thrill rides. In the 1960s and 1970s, the boardwalk underwent a period of decline, as many of the older attractions were closed or demolished. However, in the 1980s and 1990s, the boardwalk experienced a resurgence, as new attractions were built and the area was revitalized.
