Oconto History
Oconto is a city located in Oconto County, Wisconsin, United States. The name "Oconto" comes from the Ojibwe word "Waukonton" which means "crooked river." The city was first settled in the early 19th century, and it was incorporated in 1869.
Oconto played an important role in the logging industry during the late 19th century. The Oconto River was used to transport logs to sawmills, and the city became a major lumber center. Many of the buildings in Oconto from that time period were constructed using wood from the local forests.
The city also has a rich maritime history. Oconto was once home to a thriving commercial fishing industry, and it was a major port for steamboats traveling between Green Bay and Lake Michigan.
During World War II, Oconto was home to a large shipyard that produced minesweepers for the United States Navy. The shipyard employed thousands of workers, many of whom were women who took on jobs traditionally held by men.
