The Spanish explorers arrived in the 16th century, followed by British settlers in the 18th century. John D. MacArthur's Vision: In the 1950s, John D. MacArthur, a wealthy insurance magnate, purchased around 2,600 acres of land in northern Palm Beach County with the intention of creating a new community. He envisioned an upscale residential area with a strong emphasis on preserving the natural environment.
