Fort Bragg History

Fort Bragg is a small coastal city located in Mendocino County, California. It is situated on the Pacific Ocean, about 170 miles north of San Francisco. The city has a population of around 7,000 people and is known for its scenic coastline, redwood forests, and outdoor recreation opportunities.

The city was founded as a military garrison in 1857 during the Mexican-American War and was named after Captain Braxton Bragg, who later became a Confederate general during the Civil War. Fort Bragg played a key role in defending the Mendocino coast during World War II and was home to the largest coast artillery training center on the West Coast.
