History

Nestucca Bay is an estuary located in Tillamook County, Oregon. It is a historically and ecologically significant area with a diverse and rich history.

The area surrounding Nestucca Bay has been inhabited by Native American tribes for thousands of years. The indigenous Tillamook people, also known as the Nehalem or Nehalem Tillamook, have lived in the region and relied on the abundant resources provided by the bay for sustenance and trade.

In the 19th century, European settlers began arriving in the area. They engaged in logging, fishing, and dairy farming, contributing to the economic development of Tillamook County. The Nestucca River, which feeds into the bay, was an essential transportation route for moving goods and timber to and from the coastal region.

The early 20th century saw significant changes to the landscape and environment of Nestucca Bay. Logging and development increased, and the estuary's ecosystems faced pressures from human activities. Efforts were made to protect and preserve the bay and its surrounding wetlands, especially as people recognized the importance of estuaries for wildlife and the environment.
