Sarasota is a city located on the southwestern coast of Florida, in the United States. The area where the city is now located has a rich history, dating back to thousands of years before the arrival of European explorers.

The indigenous people of the area were the Calusa, who were a powerful tribe that controlled most of the southern Florida peninsula. They lived off the rich resources of the surrounding waters, and had a complex society with a system of chiefdoms.

In the 16th century, Spanish explorers arrived in the area and encountered the Calusa. However, due to disease and conflicts with European settlers, the Calusa population declined rapidly in the following centuries.

In the mid-19th century, the area where Sarasota is now located was mostly uninhabited, with a few scattered fishing villages. The city's modern history began in the late 1800s, when a group of wealthy investors purchased land in the area and established the town of Sarasota.
