History

Perryville is a city located in Perry County, Missouri, United States. It has a rich history dating back to the early 19th century. Here's an overview of the history of Perryville:

Early Settlement: Perryville was first settled in the early 1800s by French immigrants who came from the region of Alsace-Lorraine. They were attracted to the area's fertile land and established a small farming community. The town was originally named "Peruque" after the river that runs through the area. However, in 1821, the name was changed to Perryville in honor of Oliver Hazard Perry, a hero of the War of 1812.

American Civil War: Perryville played a significant role during the American Civil War. In October 1862, the Battle of Perryville took place near the town. It was one of the largest and most important battles fought in the state of Missouri. The Confederate Army, led by General Braxton Bragg, launched an invasion into Kentucky but was met by Union forces commanded by General Don Carlos Buell. The battle resulted in a tactical Union victory, forcing the Confederate army to retreat. The battle's outcome helped maintain Kentucky's position as a Union state.
