History

Munising is a city located in Alger County in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. It is situated on the southern shore of Lake Superior and is known for its stunning natural beauty, including picturesque cliffs, waterfalls, and forests. The history of Munising is closely tied to the region's Native American heritage, European exploration, and the growth of the timber and tourism industries.

Prior to European settlement, the area around Munising was inhabited by the Ojibwa (also known as Chippewa) and other Native American tribes. These tribes relied on the abundant natural resources of the region for sustenance and trade.

In the early 17th century, French explorers, including Étienne Brûlé and Samuel de Champlain, began to explore the Great Lakes region, establishing trade relationships with the Native American tribes. French fur traders and missionaries soon followed, venturing into the area that would become Munising. The French established a trading post at nearby Grand Island, just offshore from Munising, to facilitate the fur trade.
