History & Context
History White Bay is a beautiful beach and bay located on the island of Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands (BVI). Jost Van Dyke is the smallest of the four main islands in the BVI and is known for its stunning beaches and laid-back atmosphere. White Bay, in particular, is regarded as one of the most picturesque and popular destinations in the entire BVI. The history of White Bay and the British Virgin Islands as a whole dates back to the 16th century when the islands were discovered by European explorers. The British Virgin Islands were named after the Virgin Queen, Queen Elizabeth I of England. However, the islands were not initially settled by the British, and instead became a haven for pirates and privateers. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the British Virgin Islands became a hotspot for pirates due to their strategic location and abundance of hidden coves and bays. Jost Van Dyke, where White Bay is located, was a favored hideout for pirates such as Blackbeard and Captain William Thatch (better known as "Blackbeard") and Captain Kidd, who would use the secluded bays and natural harbors to ambush passing ships.
