Playa Torre del Mar History

Playa Torre del Mar is a popular beach located on the eastern coast of the Costa del Sol, in the municipality of Vélez-Málaga, province of Malaga, in Andalusia, Spain. The history of Torre del Mar and its beach dates back to ancient times, with evidence of Phoenician, Roman, and Arab settlements in the area.

During the Roman period, the area was an important agricultural center, and the ruins of several Roman villas can still be seen in the surrounding hills. The name "Torre del Mar" derives from the 16th-century watchtower that was built by the Moors to protect the coast from pirate attacks.

In the early 20th century, Torre del Mar began to develop as a tourist destination, with the construction of a promenade and the first hotels and restaurants. In the 1960s and 1970s, the town experienced a boom in tourism, as visitors from Northern Europe discovered the sunny climate and beautiful beaches of the Costa del Sol.
