History
The history of San José dates back to the 17th century, when it was a small village called Villa Nueva de la Boca del Monte. The village was founded by Spanish settlers in 1670, and it grew slowly over the next few centuries.
In 1823, San José became the capital of Costa Rica after the country gained independence from Spain. The city continued to grow in the 19th century, and it became a major commercial and political center. In the 20th century, San José experienced rapid growth, and it is now a modern metropolis with a population of over 3 million people.
The name "San José" is Spanish for "Saint Joseph." The city is named after Saint Joseph, the patron saint of Costa Rica.
