Ancient Times: Plovdiv's history dates back to around 6000 BCE, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe. It was originally settled by the Thracian tribe known as the Bessi. Later, the city came under the control of the ancient Greeks, who named it Philippopolis after King Philip II of Macedon, the father of Alexander the Great. During this period, it became an important cultural and trade hub.

Roman Era: In 46 CE, Plovdiv became part of the Roman Empire after it was conquered by the Roman legions. It played a vital role in the Roman province of Thrace and was known as Trimontium, meaning "Three Hills." The city prospered during this time, with impressive architectural structures such as the Roman amphitheater, stadium, and various public buildings being constructed.
