The area where the city now stands was originally inhabited by the Tequesta tribe of Native Americans, who fished and hunted in the area. The first European settlers arrived in the early 19th century, and the area became known as Pompano after the pompano fish that was plentiful in the local waters. In the late 1800s, the area became popular with wealthy visitors from the North who came to enjoy the area's mild climate and fishing opportunities. In the early 1900s, Pompano Beach was incorporated as a town, and a number of hotels and other tourist facilities were built to cater to visitors.
