History

Port Jefferson Village, located on the North Shore of Long Island, New York, has a rich history that dates back centuries. The area that encompasses Port Jefferson was originally inhabited by the Setauket Native American tribe, who enjoyed the region's natural resources, including its abundant waterways and forests. European settlers began arriving in the mid-17th century, and the village was established as a port and trading center in the late 18th century.

The village was initially known as Drowned Meadow due to the marshy terrain surrounding the harbor. In 1836, it was officially incorporated as the Village of Port Jefferson, named after Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States.

Port Jefferson's natural harbor made it an ideal location for shipbuilding and maritime trade. During the 19th century, the village thrived as a bustling seaport, serving as a hub for the shipping of goods such as timber, cordwood, and fish. In addition to its maritime industry, Port Jefferson also became a popular summer resort destination, attracting visitors with its scenic beauty and picturesque waterfront.
