History
Ridgeland is a city located in Madison County, Mississippi, USA. It is a suburb of the state capital, Jackson, and is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. Ridgeland has a rich history that dates back to the early 19th century.
The area that would become Ridgeland was originally inhabited by various indigenous tribes, including the Choctaw and Chickasaw people. European settlers began arriving in the early 1800s, primarily attracted by the fertile land and opportunities for agriculture.
The town of Ridgeland was officially incorporated in 1899. The name "Ridgeland" is derived from its location on the Natchez Trace, an ancient trail that connected the Mississippi River to the Cumberland River through Tennessee. As the trail passed through the area, it traversed some gentle ridges, hence the name "Ridgeland."
For much of its early history, Ridgeland remained a small, rural community with agriculture as its primary economic activity. However, with the expansion of transportation networks and the proximity to Jackson, Ridgeland gradually experienced growth and development.
