History
Roche Harbor is a historic resort and former company town located on San Juan Island in Washington State, United States. Its history dates back to the mid-19th century when the island was a hub of activity due to its strategic location along the international border between the United States and British North America (now Canada). Here's an overview of the history of Roche Harbor:
- Indigenous Presence: Before European settlement, the San Juan Archipelago, including San Juan Island, was inhabited by indigenous peoples, primarily the Coast Salish tribes, including the Lummi, Samish, and Songhees.
- Hudson's Bay Company: In 1845, the Hudson's Bay Company established a sheep ranch at Belle Vue Cove on the northwest corner of San Juan Island. They raised sheep for their wool, which was in high demand at the time.
- Charles Griffin and Richard "Rosario" Brown: In 1854, Charles Griffin and Richard "Rosario" Brown, partners in the Hudson's Bay Company, acquired Belle Vue Cove and renamed it Roche Harbor after the limestone deposit found there.
