Roscoe History

Roscoe is a small town located in Sullivan County, New York, USA. It is known for its rich history in fly fishing, and is often referred to as the "Trout Town, USA." Here's a brief overview of the town's history:

Roscoe was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Lenape and Mohawk. In the late 18th century, European settlers began to arrive in the area, drawn by the fertile land and abundant wildlife.

In the mid-19th century, the town's economy began to shift towards agriculture, particularly dairy farming. However, it was the arrival of the railroad in the 1890s that really put Roscoe on the map.

The railroad made it much easier for anglers to travel to Roscoe and fish in its streams and rivers. The town quickly became a popular destination for fly fishing enthusiasts from all over the country. In fact, the first fly fishing club in the United States, the Beaver Kill Club, was founded in Roscoe in 1886.

Today, Roscoe is still a popular destination for fly fishing, and its streams are home to a variety of fish species, including brown and rainbow trout. The town has also embraced its fishing heritage, with several fly fishing shops, lodges, and outfitters catering to visitors. In addition, Roscoe hosts an annual Trout Town USA Fishing Festival to celebrate the town's fishing culture.
