History & Context
History Cēsis, located in northern Latvia, has a rich history that dates back to ancient times. The town's history is closely tied to its strategic location and natural surroundings. Here's an overview of its historical development: Ancient and Medieval Periods: The area around Cēsis has been inhabited since ancient times, with evidence of settlements dating back to the Neolithic period. During the medieval era, the Livonian Brothers of the Sword, a Catholic military order, established a castle on the site of present-day Cēsis in the early 13th century. The castle played a significant role in the region's history, serving as a center of administration and defense during the Livonian Crusade. Teutonic Knights and Livonian Confederation: In the late 13th century, the Livonian Order, an alliance of religious and military orders, gained control of the Cēsis Castle. This marked a period of growing German influence in the region. The town developed around the castle, serving as a trading center and administrative hub within the Livonian Confederation. Swedish and Polish Rule: In the early 17th century, during the Polish-Swedish wars, Cēsis was occupied by Swedish forces. The town suffered damage during this time, including the destruction of the castle. In 1625, Cēsis was granted the rights of a town by the Swedish king Gustav II Adolph. The town became known as "Wenden" under Swedish rule and continued to play a role in regional trade and administration.
