History
South Chatham is a village located in the town of Chatham, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod. The history of South Chatham, like many towns on Cape Cod, is intertwined with the area's maritime heritage and early settlement.
The region was inhabited by the Nauset tribe of Native Americans before English settlers arrived in the early 17th century. In 1656, the town of Chatham was officially incorporated and named after Chatham, Kent, in England.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, South Chatham primarily relied on fishing and farming for its livelihood. Fishing was a particularly important industry, and many local residents were involved in the cod and mackerel fisheries. The village had a small but bustling fishing harbor, which was a center of activity for the local fishermen.
