Uddingston History

Uddingston is a town in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, located about 7 miles southeast of Glasgow. The history of Uddingston dates back to the 12th century, when a church was built on the site where the present-day St. John the Baptist Church stands. The name "Uddingston" is believed to have been derived from the Old English words "Uddin" and "Tun", meaning "farmstead of Uddin".

During the Middle Ages, Uddingston was an important market town, with a weekly market held in the town square. The town also had a mill and a brewery, which were important industries at the time. Uddingston remained a small, rural town until the Industrial Revolution, when it began to grow rapidly.

One of the key industries in Uddingston during the 19th century was coal mining. There were several collieries in the area, which employed many local people. The coal mines also brought the railway to Uddingston, with a station being built in the town in 1879.
