Philipsburg is the capital and largest city of Sint Maarten, which is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Located on the southern coast of the island, Philipsburg has a rich history shaped by European colonization and the influence of various cultures.

The history of Philipsburg dates back to the 17th century when the island of Sint Maarten was settled by the Dutch and the French. In 1631, the Dutch established a trading post on the island, and in 1648, the Treaty of Concordia was signed, dividing the island between the Dutch and the French. This division led to the establishment of two main settlements on the island, Philipsburg on the Dutch side and Marigot on the French side.
