It is a suburb of Detroit
History
Southfield, Michigan was first settled by European Americans in the early 19th century, with the first known settler being John Daniels in 1817. The area was primarily used for agriculture until the early 20th century, when the automobile industry began to boom in nearby Detroit.
In the 1950s, Southfield began to develop as a suburb of Detroit. It was officially incorporated as a city in 1958, and grew rapidly throughout the 1960s and 1970s, thanks in part to its location near several major highways and its proximity to Detroit's central business district.
During this time, Southfield became a hub for business and commerce, with several major corporations and government offices locating their headquarters there. The city also became known for its modern architecture, with several notable buildings, including the Southfield Town Center and the American Center, designed by world-renowned architects.
