Superior was first settled in the 1870s and was originally named Neva. In 1879, the town was renamed Superior after a local attorney, Henry Clay Smith, suggested the name. Superior quickly became an important center of commerce and agriculture in the region. The first newspaper in Superior was published in 1880, and the first schoolhouse was built in 1882. The town's first railroad line was completed in 1888, which greatly increased the town's economic opportunities. In 1890, Superior became the county seat of Nuckolls County, which further solidified its status as an important center in the region. The county courthouse was completed in 1897 and remains a historic landmark in the town. Superior has a rich agricultural history, with many of the town's early settlers being farmers. The town was also home to several early industries, including a flour mill, a creamery, and a brickyard.
