Sylvan Beach History
Sylvan Beach is a small community located in Oneida County, New York, on the eastern shore of Oneida Lake. The area was originally inhabited by the Oneida Indians, who fished in the lake and hunted in the surrounding forests. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1700s, and by the mid-1800s, Sylvan Beach had become a popular vacation destination for people from nearby cities, including Syracuse and Utica.
In the late 1800s, the New York, Ontario & Western Railroad built a line to Sylvan Beach, making it more accessible to tourists. The railroad also built a large amusement park in the area, which became one of the main attractions of Sylvan Beach. The park featured roller coasters, a Ferris wheel, a dance pavilion, and other rides and attractions. Many famous performers of the day, such as Harry Houdini and John Philip Sousa, performed at the park.
The amusement park operated until the mid-1960s, when it was closed and demolished. Today, Sylvan Beach is still a popular vacation spot, with a public beach, marina, and several restaurants and shops. The community hosts many events throughout the year, including a summer concert series and a winter carnival.
