History

Gravenhurst is a town located in the Muskoka region of Ontario, Canada. It has a rich history that dates back to the 19th century. Here's an overview of the Gravenhurst history:

Early Settlement: The area where Gravenhurst is situated was initially inhabited by the Ojibwe people. European settlers began arriving in the early 19th century, drawn by the region's natural resources and potential for logging and agriculture. The town's name, Gravenhurst, was derived from the name of a farm owned by a settler named Sawney Graven.

Development as a Village: Gravenhurst's development gained momentum when the Northern Railway reached the area in 1875. The railroad facilitated transportation and attracted more people to settle in the region. In 1880, Gravenhurst was incorporated as a village, and it continued to grow as a hub for the lumber industry. Sawmills and other related businesses flourished, turning Gravenhurst into an economic center.
