The most popular and most developed area of Grand Cayman
History
The history of Grand Cayman Island dates back to the 17th century when it was discovered by the British. The island was named after its distinctive geographical feature, a large reef known as the Cayman Trench, which is one of the deepest points in the Caribbean Sea.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, Grand Cayman became a popular spot for pirates and privateers due to its strategic location and natural harbors. The island was also a center for turtle fishing, which provided a vital source of food and income for the local population.
In 1831, the Cayman Islands were officially declared a British colony, and the population began to grow with the arrival of immigrants from Jamaica, Cuba, and other neighboring islands.
