It is the second-largest inland lake in Michigan. The area around Torch Lake was originally inhabited by the Anishinaabe people, who were later displaced by European settlers. In the mid-19th century, copper was discovered in the Keweenaw Peninsula, and Torch Lake became an important hub for transportation of copper and other minerals. The lake was used as a shipping route, and a number of towns and settlements grew up around its shores. These included the towns of Torch Lake, Clifton, and Mason. In addition to copper, the area was also known for its logging industry, which was important to the region's economy for many years.
