History Torch Lake is a large lake located in Northern Michigan, and it has a long and interesting history. The lake is approximately 19 miles long and covers an area of about 18,770 acres. It is the second-largest inland lake in Michigan. The area around Torch Lake was originally inhabited by the Anishinaabe people, who were later displaced by European settlers. In the mid-19th century, copper was discovered in the Keweenaw Peninsula, and Torch Lake became an important hub for transportation of copper and other minerals. The lake was used as a shipping route, and a number of towns and settlements grew up around its shores. These included the towns of Torch Lake, Clifton, and Mason. In addition to copper, the area was also known for its logging industry, which was important to the region's economy for many years. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Torch Lake became a popular destination for tourists, who came to enjoy the natural beauty of the lake and its surrounding area. A number of resorts and summer cottages were built along its shores.
