Antigonish History
Antigonish is a town located in the province of Nova Scotia, Canada. It has a rich history that dates back to the Mi'kmaq First Nations people who originally inhabited the area. The town was named after the Acadian village of "Rivière-aux-Antigonish" which was settled in the mid-1700s.
In the late 1700s, Scottish immigrants began to settle in the Antigonish area, and by the early 1800s, the town had become a hub of commerce and education. The establishment of St. Francis Xavier University in 1853 helped cement Antigonish's reputation as an academic center and a center for cultural and political activity.
