History

Varazze, a picturesque town in the Province of Savona, Liguria, is steeped in a history that dates back to antiquity. Originally a Ligurian settlement, the area was later colonized by the Romans, who recognized its strategic location along the Via Aurelia. Known as “Ad Navalia” in Roman times, Varazze gained prominence for its shipbuilding industry, a tradition that would define the town for centuries.

During the medieval period, Varazze became part of the Republic of Genoa, a maritime power that left a lasting imprint on its architecture and culture. The shipyards of Varazze flourished under Genoese rule, producing vessels that sailed across the Mediterranean and beyond. The town also fortified its defenses during this era, constructing walls and towers to protect against pirate raids and rival city-states.
