Mount Wachusett has a long and storied history dating back thousands of years. The mountain has played an important role in the lives of many indigenous peoples, including the Nipmuc and Pennacook tribes, who revered the mountain as a sacred place and believed it to be the home of powerful spirits.

In the 17th century, European settlers began to explore the area around Mount Wachusett, and by the 18th century, the mountain had become an important landmark for travelers and traders passing through central Massachusetts. In the late 1700s, the area around the mountain was settled by European farmers, who cleared the land for agriculture and built homesteads and mills.
