However, it was not until 1809 that a trading post was established there by a merchant named Isaac Davis. In the early 19th century, the Kingdom of Hawaii was established, and Honolulu became its capital. The city quickly became a hub for commerce and trade, with a deep-water harbor that attracted ships from around the world. In 1898, Hawaii was annexed by the United States, and Honolulu became a major military and naval base. During World War II, Honolulu was attacked by Japanese forces in the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
