Walloon Lake History
Walloon Lake is a glacier-formed lake located in Northern Michigan, USA, and it has a rich and fascinating history. The lake was named after the indigenous Waganakising Odawa people who lived in the area for centuries.
In the late 1800s, the lake became a popular summer destination for wealthy families from nearby cities such as Detroit and Chicago. One of the most famous families to summer on Walloon Lake was the Hemingway family. Ernest Hemingway spent many summers at his family's cottage on the lake, and it is said that the beauty of the area inspired much of his writing.
During this time, several resorts and hotels were built around the lake, catering to the wealthy summer visitors. Many of these historic buildings still stand today and have been restored and preserved as part of the area's rich history.
