Coogee History
Coogee is a coastal suburb located in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, Australia. The suburb is known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant atmosphere, and rich history.
The name Coogee is believed to have originated from the local Aboriginal word "koojah," meaning "smelly place" or "stinking seaweed," which may refer to the seaweed that washes up on the beach.
The land on which Coogee now stands was originally inhabited by the Bidjigal and Gadigal people, who used the area for fishing and hunting. European settlement in the area began in the early 19th century, and Coogee was initially used as a location for grazing and farming.
