History

Fort Walton Beach is a city located in the northwestern part of Florida, in the United States. The area that is now Fort Walton Beach was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Apalachee, Creek, and Choctaw. These tribes lived in the area for centuries before the arrival of European explorers in the 16th century.

The first European to explore the area was the Spanish explorer Panfilo de Narvaez in 1528. However, it was not until the 19th century that the area began to be settled by Europeans. In 1821, Florida became a territory of the United States, and settlers began moving into the area.

During the Civil War, Fort Walton Beach was an important location for the Confederate Army. The area was home to a number of forts and batteries, which were used to defend the coastline against Union attacks. After the war, the area began to develop into a thriving tourist destination, thanks to its beautiful beaches and warm climate.

In the early 20th century, the city was known as Camp Walton, and it was primarily a fishing village. In 1932, the city was officially incorporated as Fort Walton Beach. Throughout the mid-20th century, the city continued to grow and develop, becoming a popular destination for both tourists and military personnel stationed at nearby Eglin Air Force Base.
