Ayia Napa, once a sleepy little fishing village is now the island's most exciting cosmopolitan tourist resort. Golden sandy beaches, discos, shops, pubs and enchanting outdoor cafes are just some the attractions for the young at heart. The main landmark in the village is the Ayia Napa Monastery which was built in 1500 A.D. and is today a centre for cultural activities. Through very much in step with the rhythm of the present, Ayia Napa still retains much of her original local charm and character. Tourists are made to feel very much at ease in her warm, natural surroundings, where kindness, friendship and hospitality are extended to all.

Every weekend, throughout the year, there are tourist festivities in the Ayia Napa Festival during the last week of every September.

Cyprus is not just a lovely island. It's a country immersed in legend and history, where over 9,000 years of culture combined with todays modern living creates a unique balance of charm and individuality which can not be matched anywhere else. But Cyprus' greatest treasure is her people. Cypriots are open-hearted and spontaneous. This combined with all her many natural attractions makes Cyprus an ideal place to visit.

Various techicalities rendered the implementation of the Agreement impossible and Makarios supmitted a proposal for the amendment of the Constitution. Certain elements within the Turkish - Cypriots minority deliberately caused a turmoil and resorted to terrorist attacks. Meanwhile in 1964 Turkey waged air strikes against Cyprus. The junta in Greece in 1967 and its proxies in Cyprus were the tip of the iceberg. Junta and Makarios were not on the best of terms and finally on July 15, 1974 a coup d'etat was conducted against Makarios. Under the pretext of protecting the Turkish minority, which by the way was not at risk since the crisis that broke out was within the Greek community, Turkey invaded the island on 20.07.1974. 200.000 people were made refugees and almost 2.000 Greek-Cypriots and Greeks are still missing.

Cyprus is striving to heal the wounds and find solution to its problem for the sake of future generations. It has made some serious steps forward the last of which is its application for European Union membership. Admission procedures are expected to start this year.

Bearing this turbulent history in mind, it is no wonder that Cyprus hosts a plethora of noteworthy sites, ranging from ancient settlements, dating from the Neolithic Era, to ancient temples and sunctuaries, Greek and Roman theatres, Christian basilicas, mosaicsand fercoes, Byzantine and Crusader castles and fortresses, Gothic churches, Venetian Walls, mosques and colonial edifices, most of which are there for youto visit and given you the opportunity to live for a while the glory, the worry and the opportunity to live for a while the glory, the worry and the mystique surrounding those sites. There is no excuse for not doing so, because Cyprus is considerably small and it would be no exaggeration to say that one city is only a stone throw away of the next one.
