Newport's Beaches

Newport Beach Municipal Beach - Stretching from the Santa Ana River Jetty to the Newport and Balboa Piers and beyond to the Wedge, excellent surfing can be found throughout the entire area. Windy afternoons are perfect for kite flying, and beach volleyball is another favorite pastime here. You'll encounter golden sandy beaches and near-perfect bodysurfing waves. At the Balboa Pier, you'll find fire rings perfect for summer beach campfires. Municipal parking lots are located at both piers.

The Wedge - To enjoy incredible views of the waves and boats coming through the harbor channel, as well as the world's best bodysurfing, make a trip to the Wedge. (Experienced bodysurfers only!) Located at the end of the Balboa Peninsula at the harbor entrance, this wonderful beach is a secluded, yet exciting, spot.

Big Corona Beach - Proceed south on Pacific Coast Highway and turn right on Marguerite. Proceed two blocks to Ocean Boulevard. Turn right at the stop sign and follow signs to the Corona del Mar Main Beach entrance. A great snorkeling spot, this large family beach has fire rings, picnic tables, volleyball courts, snack bar, restrooms and showers. If you have a volleyball, bring it; the city provides volleyball nets. This is also a favorite local spot to watch boats enter the channel. Restrooms and showers are available. City parking lot fronts the ocean. Parking fees vary.

Little Corona Beach - Located off Ocean Boulevard at Poppy Avenue in Corona del Mar, this secluded cove has the best scuba diving around and is a terrific spot for exporing tide pools.

The Balboa Bay Beaches - The Balboa Peninsula's beaches offer several quiet spots fronting the harbor for parents with small children. Bay Avenue between 18th and 19th Streets is a calm beach, well-sheltered from the ocean breeze. Lifeguard supervised, it has volleyball courts, restrooms, showers and street parking. The lower bay beaches can be found at "N" Street, 10th Street and Montero.

Ecological Activities

Whale Watching - The California gray whale migrates every year within a few miles of the Pacific coastline. Passing Orange County during late December and January on their southward migration, they head for their breeding and calving grounds off the coast of Baja California, Mexico. Beginning in January and continuing through late March, you'll see whales on their northward migration, returning to their feeding grounds in the Bering, Chukchi and Beaufort seas. Bring your camera and binoculars for a wonder-filled day and witness a truly spectacular sight. In addition to searching for the gray whales, you may also spot pilot whales, dolphins, seals and sea lions.

The Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve - Come discover Upper Newport Bay, a 752-acre coastal wetland where thousands of birds find refuse in the estuary habitats and year-round recreational activity thrives in peaceful harmony with nature. Whether you're an avid bird watcher, a nature enthusiast, enjoy hiking, biking, boating and fishing, or if you simply yearn for a place to quietly collect your thoughts, Upper Newport Bay provides the perfect retreat anytime of the year.

By studying a map of the reserve with its designated foot, bike and horse trails, you can plan your own self-guided tour. Excellent bike trails span the northerly end of the bay and rim the San Diego Creek. Maps, historical literature, as well as bird and plant checklists are available at the Department of Fish and Game office, located on Shellmaker Island off Back Bay Drive.

Canoe and kayak tours, twilight cruises, family campfire programs and an evening "owl prowl" are offered during weekends throughout the year. Free two-hour walking nature tours are conducted by naturalists with the Department of Fish and Game every Saturday and Sunday. Participants will discover the beauty of our coastal wetlands and learn about the delicate ecosystem of the Upper Bay. Tours depart from Shellmaker Island at 1 p.m. The bay provides excellent year-round fishing, particularly in winter and spring. Anglers suggest the best spots are directly off Big Canyon and North Star Beach.

Small non-powered boats can be launched free of charge at Newport Aquatic Center on North Star Beach. Launching at adjacent Newport Dunes requires a fee. Swimming is also permitted bayward from North Star Beach to mid-channel.

The Environmental Nature Center - For nature lovers, this attraction provides guided walking tours in the center's two-and-a-half acre wildlife habitat, featuring 13 representative California plant communities. Specifically geared for children ages five and older. Trail guides and naturalists available.
