Calaveras and Tuolumne County

For 150 years, Calaveras County has welcomed visitors and new residents. Fifth and Sixth generation families continue to live and work in our communities. Newcomers from throughout America, have relocated to enjoy our quality of life, sense of community, land growing opportunities in agriculture, high tech, service, retail and commercial business.

From oak dotted grassy plains to the magnificent granite crests of the Sierras, Calaveras County offers visitors a scenic tour of California. Recreational opportunities abound. Major rivers form two county boundaries. The Mokelumne to our north, and the Stanislaus to our south (where California white water rafting started), offer river rafters a true white water experience. Four reservoirs offer boating fishing and skiing. An extensive cave system draws visitors underground, while biking and hiking trails can be enjoyed throughout Calaveras County. Calaveras Big Trees State Park is sure to please young and old alike.

Six golf courses, scattered throughout Calaveras County, offer a challenging round of both the weekend golfer and the professional. Golf course community lots and residences, country club facilities, and fine dining are offered at a number of courses. Culture is well represented in Calaveras County with a number of performing arts groups, numerous art galleries and antique stores, summer outdoor concert series, and arts and crafts festivals throughout the year.

The 1ยบ Gold medal for wine was received in 1872. During that decade, Calaveras County was 2nd in wine production in the state. Today Calaveras County (California's Other Wine Country), is represented by seven family owned wineries offering tasting and tours. Micro breweries are also making their presence known with two tasting rooms open and local brews served at area restaurants. The average age in the county is slightly over 40. Our total population in the 1990 census was 31,998. Calaveras County has been a statewide leader for nearly a decade in percentage of yearly population growth, a demonstration of the attraction of our unique combination of rural lifestyle, varied climate, and affordable real estate. We proudly boast being the most commemorated county in the Motherlode region with 42 California Historical Landmarkers.

Calaveras wine country, located in the Sierra Foothills Gold Rush Country, produces some of the finest premium grapes and award winning wines in the country. At the same time, the rolling hills, rich history and relaxed nature of the area make wine touring an intimate and memorable experience.

You are invited to visit Calaveras wine country. Centrally located between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park, it's also an easy drive from the San Francisco Bay area, Stockton and Sacramento. Each of the six wineries offer its own slice of history and charm, ranging from the small family owned to the largest wineries in the region.
