History & Context

Langebaan History Langebaan is a coastal town situated in the Western Cape province of South Africa. The area has a rich history dating back thousands of years. The indigenous Khoikhoi people inhabited the area for many centuries before the arrival of European settlers in the 17th century. The Khoikhoi were nomadic herders who lived off the land and sea. The first European to visit the area was Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama in 1497, but it was only in the 17th century that Dutch settlers began to establish a presence in the region. The Dutch East India Company established a trading post in nearby Saldanha Bay in 1652, and the area became an important stopping point for ships on their way to the Far East. The town of Langebaan itself was founded in 1922, when a group of farmers petitioned the government to establish a town in the area. The town's name is derived from the Dutch words 'lange' (long) and 'baan' (track or road), referring to the long and narrow lagoon that stretches for several kilometers along the coast. During the apartheid era, Langebaan was designated as a 'whites-only' area, and black residents were forcibly removed to other parts of the country. Since the end of apartheid in 1994, the town has become a popular tourist destination, known for its beautiful beaches, wildlife, and water sports.
