The Traditional Production Of Salt

Along the Dragonja river at Sečovlje, as well as in Strunjan salt-pans were developed through centuries, which were exploited until the beginning of this century, in the very same way. Salt was harvested exclusively in closed production units, pools or the so-coled „stabilis“. Each production unit was separated into evaporation and crystallization basins connected by each other with the system of channels, dikes and drainage sluices. Each salt pool has its associated building, in which a salter and his family lived through the summer months.

Fishing

The Slovenian sea is famous for its qality sardines, which often end up in fishermen`s nets in whole schools.Nowadays, fishery does not represent the core industry of Izola, although the old tradition has remained deeply rooted, and the town is still justifiably referred to as a fishing port. The scenes of the days gone by are especially brought back to life during the Fishermen`s Festival, an annual event filling nearly every corner with the inviting smell of grilled anchovies. The taste of summer, sea and salt is made even more authentic by a pinch of Mediterranean spices and drop of olive oil. The fishermens are timelessprotagonists stepping beyond the boundaries of a given moment, knowing exactly when there is a time to work and a time to rejoice.
